Your audience expects you to continue communicating with them and that means staying active on your main social media profiles. Finding ways to connect with your audience during this pandemic may seem difficult, but it’s not as hard as it seems. To help, we’ve compiled some dos and don’ts to help you successfully navigate social media during a pandemic. Check out our social media tips below.

4 Social Media Tips: Dos and Don’ts During a Pandemic

Don’t Spread Fake News

While there has always been an ample supply of news, lately there seems to be an exorbitant amount of news about the global pandemic we’re currently experiencing. Some of it is based in fact and science and some of it is based on fear and assumptions. As a business owner, it’s imperative that you’re not spreading any fake news nor fear around.

We know these are scary times, but you want to be viewed as a credible source for your product or service. If you were to spread fake news, or spread information that is overly political, you may alienate yourself from some of your customer base.

DO: Fact-check any information you’re sharing so that you maintain your credibility. At the end of the day, your credibility and trustworthiness are of utmost importance to your customers.

Don’t Go Radio Silent

It’s always good to be on top of relevant news and how it pertains to your business. For example, restaurant owners have had to completely change the way they’re operating in order to keep their employees and others safe. Rather than shying away from what’s happening, they’ve adapted to the new regulations and are trying to serve their customers as best as possible. All while they’re talking about what’s going on.

Whether your business is opened or closed during this time, your audience wants to hear from you. They want to know how you’re doing, how you’re responding and how you’re contributing to the community as a whole.

DO: Acknowledge the current situation before posting ‘business as usual’ content. It’s a good way to connect with your current and future customers. Everyone is feeling the affects of this global pandemic in some way. Use it to genuinely connect with your audience.

Don’t be a Debbie Downer or Openly Bash the Situation

We get it. The world seems to be falling apart and mending itself at the same time. It’s weird times. But don’t be that person that is feeding into all the negativity that we’re seeing every day. There have been many people, families, communities and businesses affected by COVID-19. Don’t get sucked into all the chaos.

DO: Be positive and encouraging. The world needs positivity right now, on all fronts. Your audience will appreciate it.

Don’t Just Post to Post

You can’t keep go through the motions during this time. You need to stay on your toes, producing content that keeps your audience engaged. People are sitting at home, flooding Instagram and other social media platforms. You essentially have a captive audience. Capitalize on this time and use it to your advantage, coming out on top of the chaos.

DO: Post content that is engaging and relevant. Use relevant hashtags #stayhome, #alonetogether, #stayhealthy, #socialdistancing and #staypositive to engage and expand your audience.
