SEO: The Long Game

How to Boost Your Google Rankings

It’s no secret that Google dominates as the #1 search engine on the web. So much in fact that there are a reported 3.5 billion searches per day. So what does that mean for your business online? It means that every second there is a 1/40,000 chance of appearing in a search result. Now, how do you ensure that it’s your business’s website and not your competition? That’s where SEO comes in.

Search Engine Optimization aka SEO is a digital marketing strategy that uses both on and off page factors to help make it easier for Google to categorize and rank your site. When creating search rankings, Google is mainly looking at both the credibility and the reliability of the page in relation to the search query at hand. Your goal is to make sure that your website not only meets the intention of the search query but has the web ‘street cred’ to back it up.

If you’re just getting started with optimizing your site, bear in mind that this is not a strategy that bears results over night, but it is one that is worth your time. As you dive in, here are 3 tips to add to your SEO strategy.

3 Tips to Up Your SEO Game

Be Patient

We live in a world of instant gratification. Order food from your bed, grocery shop on your couch or order something off Amazon Prime and have it the next day. But when it comes to search engine optimization, that’s not the case. In fact, it’s not even close.

You’d be surprised how often we hear stories of business owners that paid a company (a lot of money) to handle their SEO with promises of being on the first page of Google rankings within a month. The reality is that when it comes to organic SEO, this is a promise that’s almost impossible to deliver. SEO takes patience and persistence. It takes understanding that you are going to make progress, but it will be at a much slower pace than you think. Slow and steady wins the SEO race.

Focus on Localized Areas

If you own a business in a large city, you want people to be able to find you. Let’s say you have a pet sitting business in Los Angeles. When your potential clients go and search for your services, they’ll probably type in something like pet sitting Los Angeles or Los Angeles pet sitters. But if someone lives in Mid-City or another area like the Westside, they might search something like pet sitting in Mid-City. This is your opportunity to capture that client on a local level. Focus in local areas and you might be able to make more of a dent in your Google rankings.

Add New Content Regularly

One of the things that Google uses to determine your ranking is how often you are adding new content to your website on a regular basis. When you add content to your website regularly, you’re telling Google that you’re credible. This can be additional pages that you’re building out on your site or can also come in the form of a monthly, bi-weekly or even weekly blog. This takes time. You’re not going to start a blog and instantly be on page one of the Google search. But over time, you’re going to build credibility and increase your Google rankings organically.
